Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced a significant achievement in its national digitalization journey, reporting the successful completion of 25 digital projects under the National Programme for Digital Transformation, known as Tahawul. The milestone marks a 100% completion rate for this set of initiatives, with an additional 11 projects already 80% complete, signaling a major step forward in realizing the ambitious goals of Oman Vision 2040.
A Milestone for Digital Governance
The completion of these projects is a cornerstone of Oman’s strategy to digitize government services, enhance operational transparency, and improve the user experience for both citizens and residents. By streamlining public service delivery, the Tahawul programme aims to create a more efficient, accessible, and responsive government infrastructure. According to Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Kharousi, Director General of Digital Transformation and Sector Empowerment at MTCIT, these efforts have already strengthened Oman’s standing in global e-government and digital competitiveness rankings.
Key Initiatives Driving Transformation
Among the flagship projects completed is the Unified Government Services Portal and its accompanying mobile application, which provides a single digital gateway for accessing a wide range of government services. Other pivotal initiatives include the National Open Data Portal, the National Digital Trust Services platform (Thiqa), a Central Smart Chat Platform, and the Simplification and Engineering of Government Services Procedures Project. These tools are designed to streamline interactions and foster greater citizen engagement. The establishment of a National Records Centre and a strategic public-private partnership framework further solidifies the foundation for institutional digital transformation.
Measuring Impact and Fostering Innovation
The tangible impact of the Tahawul programme is already evident. Between January and May 2025, over 11.4 million digital transactions were processed across 48 government entities. During this period, 381 shared services were simplified and 16 integrated user journeys were designed to improve efficiency. Beyond central government, the programme has also driven regional innovation through the Governorate Ambassadors Digital Transformation Initiative. This has led to the implementation of smart lighting, AI-powered monitoring in slaughterhouses, drone-assisted construction oversight, and the use of smart glasses for inspections, demonstrating a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology at all levels.
