Oman’s Khedmah Expands Into Insurtech With New In-App Medical Insurance

4 Min Read

Oman-based digital payments and services platform Khedmah has officially entered the insurtech sector with the launch of in-app medical insurance. This strategic expansion, in partnership with Dhofar Insurance, integrates health coverage directly into Khedmah’s established digital ecosystem, aiming to broaden access to essential financial services across the Sultanate.

A Strategic Push Into Insurtech

The collaboration leverages Dhofar Insurance’s deep underwriting expertise and Khedmah’s extensive digital distribution network. This synergy enables a fully integrated insurance journey within the Khedmah app, allowing users to select and purchase policies seamlessly. The move marks a significant diversification for Khedmah, extending its services beyond payments and collections into the regulated financial services industry to deepen customer engagement and lifetime value.

By embedding insurance into a high-frequency usage platform, Khedmah aims to address a key market friction point: accessibility. The company is banking on convenience and digital-first distribution to lower barriers to insurance adoption, especially among underserved segments of the population.

Coverage for Businesses and Households

Khedmah’s new insurance portfolio is structured to cater to diverse market needs. The platform allows small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to procure worker health cover and unified medical insurance for employees, simplifying compliance with regulatory requirements and enabling more efficient cost management.

The service also digitizes the process for securing mandatory medical insurance for domestic workers, such as housemaids, drivers, and caregivers—a category that has traditionally required in-person processing. For individuals and families, Khedmah offers flexible personal medical insurance plans that can be tailored to cover users and their dependents.

Expanding the Digital Services Ecosystem

This launch aligns with Khedmah’s overarching strategy to position itself as a central hub for essential services in Oman. The company already facilitates over 50 services through its mobile app, self-service kiosks, website, and nationwide branch network. Adding insurance extends this value proposition from daily payments to financial protection.

Zaaima Al Qasimi, from business development at Khedmah, stated that the expansion reflects the company’s commitment to providing convenience and peace of mind. She noted that offering comprehensive medical insurance empowers customers to more effectively manage both their health and financial security.

Insurtech Momentum in the Sultanate

Khedmah’s entry into insurance comes as digital adoption accelerates across Oman’s financial services sector. Both regulators and market players are increasingly embracing technology-led distribution models. For traditional insurers, partnering with established digital platforms like Khedmah provides an efficient route to scale and customer acquisition.
As competition heats up among the region’s fintechs and super-apps, Khedmah’s expansion signals its ambition to become the single digital gateway for essential services in Oman, with successful execution being the key to unlocking this new growth driver.
