Amazon UAE Tackles E-Commerce Waste With New Dubai-Wide Recycling Programme

3 Min Read

Amazon UAE has announced a significant sustainability initiative, launching a citywide packaging recycling programme in collaboration with Enviroserve. The new service aims to simplify the recycling process for customers across Dubai by establishing over 150 dedicated drop-off points, reinforcing the e-commerce giant’s commitment to environmental responsibility within the region.

Driving Sustainability with Strategic Partnerships

This programme is a direct contribution to the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030 and supports Amazon’s global Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon operations by 2040. By partnering with Enviroserve, a recycling partner certified by Dubai Municipality and the Ministry of Environment, Amazon ensures that collected materials are processed efficiently, diverting waste from landfills and supporting a circular economy.

Prashant Saran, Director of Operations for Amazon Middle East, Africa and Turkey, stated, “This programme makes it easier for customers to recycle packaging while supporting the UAE’s sustainability goals. By pioneering this service in the UAE, we are creating the necessary infrastructure for more responsible practices.” Shashidhar Y S, Board Member and Managing Director at Enviroserve, added, “Working with Amazon, we are making recycling more accessible to communities… By ensuring packaging materials are responsibly collected and processed, we are helping to keep valuable resources in circulation.”

Seamless Recycling for Dubai Consumers

To make recycling as accessible as possible, customers can find their nearest drop-off location by scanning a QR code printed on their Amazon.ae packages. This code directs them to the Amazon Second Chance webpage, which provides comprehensive instructions for recycling various materials, including cardboard boxes, plastic mailers, and packing paper. The drop-off stations have been strategically placed in residential communities, commercial areas, and townhouse developments to maximize convenience.

A Broader Commitment to Reducing Waste

The recycling programme is the latest addition to Amazon’s wider sustainability efforts in the region. The company already utilizes machine learning models to optimize packaging, reducing the use of excess materials. Furthermore, its ‘Ships in Product Packaging’ initiative allows certain items to be delivered in their original packaging, completely eliminating the need for an additional Amazon box. These measures collectively demonstrate a long-term strategy to minimize the environmental footprint of its operations.
