Snapchat, a platform historically centered on private conversations, is broadening its scope by introducing “Topic Chats,” a new feature designed to host public conversations around shared interests and current events. The move signals a strategic shift for the social network, creating dedicated spaces for users to discuss everything from global sports like Formula 1 to popular reality television.
A New Era of Public Conversation
Inspired by the engagement seen in the comments section of its Spotlight feature, Snapchat developed Topic Chats to provide a more structured and dedicated environment for community discussions. The feature will be accessible through various points within the app, including Chat shortcuts, search, the Stories page, and directly from relevant Spotlight videos, indicated by a prominent yellow “Join the Chat” button.
In addition to user messages, these chatrooms will also surface related Spotlight videos, creating a richer, more integrated content experience.
Privacy and Moderation at the Forefront
While embracing public discourse, Snapchat is emphasizing user privacy. A user’s display name will be visible in the chat, but their profile will remain private to non-friends. Others in the Topic Chat will not be able to tap through to a user’s profile, preventing unwanted friend requests or direct messages.
To maintain a safe environment, the company will deploy LLM technology and other safety tools to moderate conversations. All messages must comply with Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, and users can report inappropriate content. The company has stated it will take action against violators, which may include warnings or account blocking. Messages sent within Topic Chats will be retained for up to five years.
Relevance for MENA’s Social Landscape
For the MENA region, where Snapchat maintains a significant and highly engaged user base, particularly among the youth in key markets like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the introduction of Topic Chats is a noteworthy development. This feature could become a major hub for conversations around popular regional topics, such as local sports leagues, Ramadan TV series, and major cultural events.
MENA-based content creators and brands can leverage Topic Chats as a new channel for direct community engagement, fostering deeper connections with their audience. For startups in the social and media tech space, this move by a major platform highlights the growing trend towards community-centric features and the increasing importance of public, interest-based digital forums, potentially influencing product strategies and market opportunities across the region.
