The University of Jordan, the country’s largest public research university, has initiated a new research project titled “Empowering Teachers: 21st Century Skills.” The program is designed to enhance teacher preparation and professional development by integrating artificial intelligence tools, digital skills, and modern pedagogical methods. This effort is a strategic collaboration with Vanderbilt University in the US and Jordan’s national Ministry of Education.
A Three-Pillar Collaboration
The initiative brings together key institutions to create a robust, interdisciplinary research environment. The University of Jordan’s Department of Artificial Intelligence is leading the project, working closely with Vanderbilt University’s Department of Teaching and Learning and Jordan’s Ministry of Education. This partnership aims to produce evidence-led improvements in teacher education for the AI era, positioning Jordan as a regional leader in educational innovation.
Fusing AI with Modern Pedagogy
The core mission of the project is to combine AI and digital tools with essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The research will focus on several key areas, including teacher self-efficacy, digital competence, the application of AI in education, global citizenship, and digital ethics. By promoting adaptive, student-centered teaching models, the program seeks to improve the overall quality of learning and ensure equity and inclusion in schools.
Aligning with National Tech Education Goals
This research initiative aligns with Jordan’s broader strategy to modernize its education system. The country’s National Center for Curriculum Development has already started integrating advanced technology topics like AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing into the national curriculum for several grade levels. The University of Jordan’s project is a critical step in preparing the nation’s educators to effectively teach these subjects and utilize new AI-powered tools in the classroom.
