Google Fuses AI Overviews and Conversational Mode to Reshape Search

4 Min Read

Google has begun testing a significant update to its search interface, merging its AI Overviews with the conversational AI Mode. The new feature aims to create a more fluid and intuitive process for information discovery, allowing users to transition seamlessly from a standard search query to a deeper, conversational exploration of a topic.

A More Seamless Search Experience

Until now, Google’s AI-powered search features existed as two distinct experiences. Users would receive an AI Overview—an AI-generated summary at the top of the results page—for many queries. However, to engage in a back-and-forth dialogue or ask complex follow-up questions, they needed to navigate to a separate AI Mode tab, an experience similar to using ChatGPT.
This new test, currently rolling out globally on mobile devices, eliminates that separation. Users who receive an AI Overview will now have the option to ask follow-up questions directly from the same screen, instantly entering the conversational AI Mode powered by Google’s Gemini. This integration acknowledges that the path to finding information is often not linear and that a simple query can frequently evolve into a more in-depth inquiry.

The Competitive Edge

The move comes as competition in the generative AI space intensifies, particularly with rival OpenAI reportedly focusing its resources on enhancing its core chat product. By integrating its conversational AI more deeply into its flagship product, Google is leveraging the massive scale of its search engine to drive adoption for Gemini.

While Gemini currently has over 650 million monthly users, AI Overviews reaches a staggering 2 billion users. Unifying these two features could provide Gemini with a significant advantage in consumer adoption, turning billions of routine searches into potential conversational AI interactions.

In a statement on X, Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, explained the philosophy behind the change. “You shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question,” he noted. The goal is to allow users to get a helpful starting point with an AI Overview and then effortlessly dive deeper without switching contexts.

“This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find exactly what you need,” Stein added.

Implications for the MENA Tech Ecosystem

For the MENA region’s founders and tech professionals, this evolution in search has several key implications. As Google’s AI provides more comprehensive answers directly on the results page, startups across the region will need to refine their SEO and content strategies to remain visible. The focus may shift from driving clicks to becoming an authoritative source that Google’s AI references.

Furthermore, for the burgeoning AI startup scene in MENA, this move by a global tech giant raises the competitive bar. It highlights the trend of deeply integrating advanced AI into core, high-traffic products, pushing local innovators to identify unique niches and value propositions that can coexist or compete with these large-scale platforms.
