Abu Dhabi’s social sector, under the leadership of the Department of Community Development (DCD), is bolstering its social impact ecosystem by supporting initiatives that offer innovative solutions to societal challenges. This strategic push aims to empower both individuals and institutions to amplify their developmental contributions and foster a culture of community engagement.
High-Level Visit Spotlights Key Initiatives
In a move to highlight pioneering models in social entrepreneurship, H.E. Shames Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Chairman of DCD – Abu Dhabi, recently visited the headquarters of the “Athar+” Center. The center was launched by the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an to serve as a hub for social innovation. The visit underscores the emirate’s commitment to supporting initiatives that create a sustainable, positive impact and promote community-wide participation in development goals.
During the tour, the delegation reviewed a range of projects led by social enterprises and non-profit organizations. These initiatives are tackling key community challenges in financial literacy, health, sustainability, economic development, and quality of life, all while promoting principles of social inclusion.
A Vision for an Innovative Third Sector
H.E. Shames Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri emphasized Abu Dhabi’s growing focus on strengthening the social entrepreneurship ecosystem, viewing it as a critical pathway for empowering the community to devise sustainable solutions to social challenges.
“The third sector and companies with a social purpose represent an advanced model of development work based on innovation and partnership,” he stated. “Through their community-focused initiatives, individuals and institutions contribute to developing practical and sustainable solutions for various social issues, which enhances the positive impact of these efforts on society.”
Al Dhaheri added that showcasing these leading models reflects the importance of shared social responsibility in building more cohesive and sustainable communities. He noted that these efforts align with the values established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which have made humanitarian work and giving an integral part of the UAE’s identity.
Unifying Efforts for Community Well-being
H.E. Abdullah Al Ameri, Director General of the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, reiterated the organization’s mission to foster social innovation and improve quality of life across the emirate.
“We believe that every contribution is capable of creating a positive social impact. From this standpoint, we work to unify community efforts, direct giving, and support social entrepreneurship to develop innovative solutions that address social priorities,” Al Ameri explained. “This approach facilitates giving and motivates various sectors of society to participate effectively, reflecting the values of social responsibility and cooperation.”
