Abu Dhabi To Pioneer Mercedes-Benz And Nvidia’s Global Robotaxi Fleet

3 Min Read

Mercedes-Benz has announced a landmark partnership with tech giants Nvidia and Uber to develop a global robotaxi ecosystem, selecting Abu Dhabi as the pioneering city for the initial launch. The collaboration aims to deploy a fleet of autonomous, all-electric Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicles, marking a significant step for autonomous mobility in the MENA region.

A Global Alliance For Autonomous Mobility

The initiative brings together leaders from the automotive, software, and mobility sectors to create a comprehensive, Level 4 autonomous driving platform. While Nvidia provides the core autonomous driving technology and Uber contributes its vast ride-hailing network, the ecosystem is designed to be open.

The platform will be built upon Mercedes-Benz’s proprietary MB.OS operating system, allowing other partners to develop advanced driving applications. As part of this, Mercedes-Benz also announced a separate project with Chinese software firm Momenta to develop a unique robotaxi experience. These vehicles will be operated in Abu Dhabi by Lumo, a subsidiary of the technology company K2.

Abu Dhabi At The Forefront

The UAE’s capital is set to become the first city to witness this futuristic service in action. The first test fleet of autonomous S-Class robotaxis is scheduled to be deployed on the roads of Abu Dhabi later this year, operated by Lumo. This move positions the emirate as a key global hub for testing and implementing next-generation transportation solutions.

In a statement, Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, Development and Procurement, highlighted the project’s strategic importance. “The next step on our roadmap is to enable a robotaxi experience based on the new S-Class. To accomplish our goal, we have strong industry-leading partners at our side. For us, these partnerships mark the beginning of our entry into the robotaxi market with the S-Class and MB.OS as the ultimate platform.”

The Technology Powering The Fleet

At the heart of the operation is Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion architecture and Drive AV Level 4 software, positioning the chipmaker as a formidable competitor to established players like Tesla and Waymo.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class vehicle platform is engineered for safety, integrating critical redundancies for steering, braking, compute, and power supply to ensure fail-safe operation. The MB.OS software will serve as the central nervous system, enabling the seamless integration of driverless technology for shuttle services planned across America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
