Abu Dhabi’s ADIA Participates In $140 Million Round For Empower Semiconductor

3 Min Read

Empower Semiconductor, a US-based company developing a new generation of power management chips, has closed a Series D funding round of over $140 million. The round saw significant participation from a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), signaling strong interest from the Gulf in foundational deep-tech.

The investment was led by Fidelity Management & Research Company, with other participants including CapitalG, Walden Catalyst Ventures, Maverick Silicon, Atreides Management, Socratic Partners, and Knollwood. This latest financing brings Empower Semiconductor’s total funding to over $200 million.

Innovating Power Management For Data Centers

Empower Semiconductor is pioneering a category of power management chips known as Integrated Voltage Regulators (IVRs). This technology allows for a significant reduction in chip size, shrinking the required space to nearly one-third of traditional solutions. This compact design enables the IVRs to be integrated directly within processors, which simplifies overall design and dramatically increases the efficiency of critical infrastructure like data centers.

Driving Efficiency And Performance Gains

The company’s technology offers substantial performance benefits, including the ability to execute dynamic voltage scaling—a key energy-saving process—up to 100 times faster than competing solutions. This can lead to a reduction in power consumption by as much as 50%. Furthermore, Empower has developed an ultra-thin silicon capacitor called ECAP, which helps reduce the number of required components by 40%, giving chip designers greater flexibility to create smaller and more efficient processors.

Strategic Investment From The Gulf

The participation of ADIA in this funding round highlights a growing trend of strategic investments from the Gulf’s major sovereign wealth funds into the global deep-tech and semiconductor industries. This move aligns with the region’s long-term economic diversification strategies, which increasingly focus on acquiring stakes in foundational technologies that will power future industries, from artificial intelligence to high-performance computing.
