The United Arab Emirates’ drive to become a global hub for artificial intelligence has gained a critical academic pillar. Ajman University has officially launched a new PhD program in Artificial Intelligence, completing an end-to-end academic pipeline from undergraduate degrees to doctoral research within a single institution.
Quick Facts
- Completes full undergraduate-to-doctoral AI academic pathway.
- Ranks first locally for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
- Aligns directly with the UAE AI Strategy 2031 objectives.
Bridging the AI Talent Gap in the Middle East
While the UAE possesses heavy institutional support for technology development, building a sustainable tech ecosystem requires highly technical, PhD-level researchers to execute complex strategies. Ajman University’s doctoral program addresses this specific talent shortage by building upon its existing Bachelor of Science in Data Analytics and Master of Science in AI.
The new research-intensive program is delivered through the College of Engineering and Information Technology. Candidates will work under the guidance of a faculty recognized globally for its academic impact. Faculty members guiding the program currently rank among Stanford University’s top two percent of scientists worldwide, as well as the top 0.5 percent on the research ranking platform ScholarGPS.
Strengthening UAE Deep Tech and Academic Infrastructure
Doctoral students will conduct their publication-driven research within the university’s advanced laboratories and its Artificial Intelligence Research Center (AIRC). Established in 2020, the AIRC actively consolidates technical expertise across five dedicated research groups.
These groups focus on machine learning, deep learning, data science, robotics, machine vision, natural language processing, and evolutionary computation. The center also extends its mandate past theoretical research to support industry partnerships, startup incubation, and practical technology transfer.
The institution backs its new offering with rigorous global standards. The PhD program received full accreditation from the UAE’s Commission for Academic Accreditation prior to launch. Furthermore, the university holds accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission, marking it as the first private, non-profit university in the UAE and the wider Arab region to secure this distinction.
Ajman University’s academic standing heavily supports its latest expansion. According to the QS Subject Rankings 2025, the institution ranks first in the UAE for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, placing it among the top 51 to 100 institutions globally in the field. Overall, it secures the 440th spot in the 2026 QS World University Rankings and ranks 12th in the Arab region.
Aligning Research with the UAE AI Strategy 2031
The university engineered the PhD curriculum to serve the practical needs of the region’s rapidly maturing digital economy. Graduates of the program will step into leadership positions across advanced research institutions, government policy sectors, and industry innovation hubs.
Research initiatives within the program tie directly into the priorities outlined by the UAE AI Strategy 2031. Candidates will target applied research in critical verticals, including healthcare innovation, smart cities, cybersecurity, financial technologies, sustainability, and national digital transformation frameworks.
