Algiers is set to become the epicenter of African innovation as it hosts the fourth edition of the African Startup Conference from December 6 to 8. Organized by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-enterprises and the public accelerator Algeria Venture, the event is poised to be the largest of its kind on the continent, expecting over 25,000 participants at the “Abdelatif Rahal” International Conference Center.
Held under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the conference operates under the theme “Fostering the Emergence of African Champions,” reinforcing its status as a pivotal platform for building a competitive and integrated African tech ecosystem.
Fostering African Champions
The conference aims to spotlight the success of “African Champions”—startups that have achieved significant revenue and contribute meaningfully to their national economies. This vision is strongly supported by Algeria’s leadership.
President Tebboune recently emphasized the event’s importance, describing it as a “vital artery connecting African countries with the world.” He further stated that “the orientation towards a startup economy, based on an African-African partnership, is the most successful model for building a strong, diversified economy, with science as its base and Algeria as its incubator.”
A Continental Gathering
The event will convene an influential assembly of ecosystem stakeholders, including over 35 ministerial delegations, more than 200 exhibitors from across Africa and beyond, and upwards of 300 international experts. A significant contingent of over 150 investors will also be present, alongside entrepreneurs, incubators, and members of the African diaspora.
This year’s edition will feature Rwanda as the “Guest of Honor,” recognizing the country’s remarkable progress in innovation and Algeria’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with leading African nations in entrepreneurship.
Key Agendas and Discussions
The three-day conference will feature a packed agenda with specialized sessions and workshops on critical topics such as FinTech, artificial intelligence, content creation, research, and innovation. Parallel discussions will address current issues including technological evolution, telecommunications infrastructure, the digital sector’s climate impact, and digital solutions for climate resilience.
Participants will delve into the future of “Africa with AI,” best practices for incubation and scaling, and strategies for strengthening the pan-African innovation ecosystem. The event will also facilitate dedicated B2B meetings to connect project holders with financing institutions.
Building on Past Successes
Since its inception in 2022, the African Startup Conference has become an essential forum for connecting African ecosystems and fostering dialogue between policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs. The inaugural conference led to the “Algiers Declaration for the Development of Startups in Africa,” which was subsequently adopted by the African Union Executive Council in March 2023. This endorsement highlights Algeria’s growing leadership role in promoting intra-African cooperation and shaping the continent’s tech-driven future.
