Algerian startup Booxium, the country’s largest online bookselling platform, has announced the launch of its new service, ChatBook. The innovative software solution leverages artificial intelligence to help readers in public and university libraries search for books using natural language.

According to Zakaria Maouche, the company’s Commercial Director, this service marks a significant first in digitizing reading services within Algeria.

A New Chapter for Algerian Libraries

ChatBook is designed to transform the book discovery process in institutional settings. By integrating AI and natural language processing, the software allows users to move beyond keyword searches and find titles through conversational queries, making it easier for students and the public to navigate extensive library collections.

This launch represents a key part of Booxium’s mission to revolutionize the book industry in Algeria by creating digital solutions that connect all stakeholders in the ecosystem.

Digitizing Algeria’s Book Ecosystem

Since its inception, Booxium has aimed to bridge the gap between publishers and readers. Its e-commerce platform aggregates over 100,000 titles from both local and international publishing houses. The service offers a seamless purchasing experience, complete with home delivery and secure online payment options via Algeria’s Dahabia and CIB cards.

The company’s vision is to become a national reference point for book marketing and smart search solutions, catering to both individual consumers and institutional clients like university and public libraries.

Funding and Future Ambitions

Booxium’s growth journey has been supported by key local institutions. In 2024, the startup secured funding from the Algerian Startup Fund (ASF) to accelerate its digital expansion within the book sector.

Looking ahead, the company plans to broaden its digital offerings by introducing e-books and audiobooks. This expansion is part of a wider strategy to create a fully integrated digital book ecosystem, making knowledge more accessible across the country.
