Algeria’s Super App Yassir Acquires Uno Hypermarkets To Expand Into Hybrid Retail

3 Min Read

Algerian super app Yassir has announced its acquisition of the Uno hypermarket chain from the Cevital Group, marking a significant strategic move into the physical retail sector across North Africa. The acquisition signals the company’s ambition to create a seamless, hybrid shopping experience that merges digital convenience with traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

The Uno stores are set to be rebranded as “Yassir Market,” with the flagship location planned to open at the Bab Ezzouar shopping centre in Algiers during Ramadan 2026. This initiative aims to redefine the regional retail landscape, particularly filling a market gap created by Jumia’s recent withdrawal from grocery and hypermarket operations.

A Leap into Integrated Commerce

With the acquisition, Yassir is poised to integrate its robust digital ecosystem into a physical retail environment. The company plans extensive renovations and the acquisition of additional outlets to solidify its new market presence.

The revamped Yassir Market stores will offer a range of premium products, beauty and catering services, and a private white-label brand. This omnichannel approach is designed to enhance customer interaction by allowing a fluid transition between online and offline shopping.

Powering Retail with a Digital Ecosystem

Transactions at Yassir Market will be powered by Yassir Cash, the company’s digital wallet, which is supported by a network of over 5,000 agents. While traditional payment methods will still be available, this integration encourages a shift towards digital payments.

Furthermore, the Yassir+ loyalty program will be a core component of the in-store experience, enabling customers to earn and redeem points, thereby boosting engagement and retention. This move aligns with founder Noureddine Tayebi’s vision of fostering greater financial inclusion through technology. As he stated, “With Yassir Market, we want to bring technology into retail.”

Expanding B2B Logistics

Beyond its direct-to-consumer focus, Yassir also intends to build a comprehensive B2B logistics network. This new arm will manage bulk deliveries for large-scale clients such as embassies and corporations, complementing its existing last-mile delivery services and leveraging its new physical footprint.
