Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation have announced a $1.5 million grant pool for the 2026 edition of the Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) programme, aiming to support and empower entrepreneurs across the African continent, including those in Tunisia.
Now in its eighth year, the initiative is operating under the theme “Defining Africa’s Future Today,” signaling a commitment to fostering startups that are addressing critical economic and social challenges.
Fostering Pan-African Innovation
The programme is targeting founders who are building impactful businesses in sectors vital to Africa’s long-term development. Key areas of focus include fintech, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, manufacturing, and other emerging technologies that have the potential to drive sustainable growth.
The initiative seeks to identify and uplift entrepreneurs who are not only creating profitable ventures but are also contributing positively to their communities and local economies.
More Than Just Funding
Beyond the significant financial grants, the ABH programme offers participating entrepreneurs invaluable access to mentorship, strategic guidance, and high-level networking opportunities. Finalists will connect with a wide network of prominent investors, venture capitalists, and established business leaders.
This holistic support system is designed to help startups scale their operations effectively, refine their business models, and strengthen their market presence both regionally and on a global scale.
Expanding Reach and Recognition
For the 2026 cycle, the programme is broadening its impact by expanding its recognition pool to include 100 finalists. This strategic shift ensures that a larger number of promising entrepreneurs will gain exposure to international investors and potential corporate partners, even if they do not advance to the final competition stage.
Spotlight on Tunisia and Emerging Hubs
A key focus of this year’s initiative is to deepen engagement in ten specific African markets, with a particular emphasis on supporting underrepresented startup ecosystems. The organisers have explicitly named Tunisia, alongside Namibia and Zambia, as key markets for this focused effort.
This move is intended to bridge the investment and visibility gaps for founders operating outside of Africa’s traditionally dominant startup hubs, providing Tunisian entrepreneurs a unique platform to attract global capital and partnerships.
