Cairo University Launches AI Hackathon 2025 to Foster Innovation

Cairo University has launched its AI Hackathon 2025, an event designed to support innovation and entrepreneurship by encouraging university students to develop creative solutions using artificial intelligence technologies. The launch event was held under the patronage of the university’s president, Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadek, with the participation of students, faculty, and representatives from the Egypt Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The launch event showcased the university’s comprehensive approach to building an AI-driven innovation ecosystem:

  • New Event: The launch of the Cairo University AI Hackathon 2025.
  • AI Strategy: The university presented its AI strategy, the first of its kind in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • New Company: The event featured a presentation on the new Cairo University Company for the Management and Investment of Intangible Assets.
  • Upcoming Conference: The university announced the upcoming International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, CU AI Nexus 2025, on October 18-19.

A National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence

During the event, the university reviewed its AI strategy, which is the first of its kind for a university in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East. Dr. Haitham Hamza, Dean of the Faculty of Computers and Artificial Intelligence, explained that the strategy is based on four main pillars: developing education and knowledge production, stimulating scientific research and innovation, spreading community awareness, and developing administrative capabilities within the university.


A New Company to Commercialize University Research

The event also introduced the Cairo University Company for the Management and Investment of Intangible Assets, the first of its kind in the history of Egyptian universities. Dr. Amr Suleiman, the general supervisor, explained that the company aims to form partnerships with research and industrial institutions, market patents and copyrights, finance innovations and research outcomes, and establish research labs to support innovators and startups. The goal is to transform Cairo University’s research into sustainable economic and developmental value.


Empowering Students with Practical Skills

To support the student participants, the Egypt Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation presented a workshop titled “Design Thinking for Creative Solutions”. The workshop was designed to help the hackathon’s students transform their ideas into practical and competitive innovations.
