Cisco Unveils Unified Software Stack To Power Distributed Quantum Computing

3 Min Read

Global technology leader Cisco has announced a unified quantum networking software stack designed to enable quantum computers to work together as a single, powerful system. This breakthrough aims to overcome the hardware limitations of today’s individual machines by allowing organisations to run complex quantum algorithms across multiple processors.

A Full-Stack Approach to Quantum Networking

Applying the same systems-level strategy that helped pioneer the classical internet, Cisco is developing a complete quantum networking stack. This includes custom silicon like its recently launched quantum network entanglement chip, control software, and applications that bridge the quantum and classical computing worlds. The new unified software stack features three distinct layers: Applications for quantum and classical use cases, Control protocols to manage hardware and software devices, and a Devices layer with an SDK and APIs for physical components.

Showcasing Quantum’s Potential with New Prototypes

To demonstrate the practical applications of its new stack, Cisco revealed three research prototypes. The Quantum Compiler is the industry’s first network-aware distributed compiler, allowing algorithms to run across multiple processors. Quantum Alert is an application that provides eavesdropper-proof security with guarantees from physics, protecting against “harvest-now-decrypt-later” attacks. Finally, Quantum Sync uses entanglement to enable correlated decision-making across distributed locations for classical use cases like high-frequency trading, where speed is critical.

Implications for the MENA Tech Ecosystem

While a global announcement, the innovation holds significant relevance for the rapidly advancing technology landscape in the MENA region. By developing foundational quantum infrastructure, Cisco is providing the tools that could empower the region’s research institutions, enterprises, and governments to explore next-generation computing solutions.

Mohannad Abuissa, Managing Director Solutions Engineering and CTO, Cisco Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Romania and CIS, commented on the launch, stating, “Quantum networking represents the next frontier in computing, and these launches mark an important step toward making it practical. By applying Cisco’s full-stack approach to quantum, we are enabling secure communications and advanced applications that bridge both classical and quantum worlds. These innovations not only accelerate the path to real business value but also reinforce our commitment to driving the region’s leadership in future-ready technologies.”
