Dubai has officially launched its driverless taxi service, deploying a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles in the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim districts. The move marks a significant milestone in the city’s ambition to become a global leader in autonomous mobility, bringing futuristic transport solutions to residents and visitors. The project is a collaboration between the Dubai Taxi Company and Chinese technology giant Baidu.
Quick Facts
- 100 autonomous vehicles now operational.
- Initial service covers Jumeirah & Umm Suqeim.
- Goal: 25% of all trips driverless by 2030.
How to Ride: Booking Through Apollo Go and Uber
For a limited time, passengers can book complimentary rides through the Apollo Go app, operated by Baidu. Alternatively, the service is integrated into the Uber app under the ‘Autonomous’ option, with fares for these trips ranging from Dhs 63 to Dhs 80. While the vehicles operate without a driver, some initial trips may include a safety specialist onboard to monitor performance.
The Tech Behind Dubai’s Autonomous Fleet
The vehicles are equipped with advanced artificial intelligence, sophisticated sensing systems, and real-time decision-making technology. This allows them to navigate complex urban environments, react to pedestrians and traffic signals, and adhere to all traffic laws. The launch follows extensive trials that have been underway since April 2025 with partners including Uber and WeRide, ensuring the system’s readiness for public use.
A Strategic Push for a Driverless Future
This initiative is a core component of the city’s broader strategy to automate its transport network. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), explained the project’s strategic importance.
“Autonomous taxis contribute to first- and last-mile connectivity and provide transport options for different segments of the community, including senior citizens and people of determination,” Al Tayer stated. “They also aim to improve road safety, as human error accounts for over 90% of traffic accidents.”
Officials plan to expand the driverless fleet to 4,000 vehicles, further integrating them into Dubai’s public transport system.
