In a move set to bolster its status as a global hub for the gold and jewellery trade, the Dubai Municipality has launched the world’s first smart self-service device for testing the purity of precious metals. The innovative Smart Gold and Jewellery Testing Lab was unveiled during GITEX Global 2025, marking a significant technological advancement for the industry.
AI-Powered Precision in Under a Minute
The new device operates completely autonomously, leveraging a combination of cutting-edge spectroscopic analysis, X-ray technology, and artificial intelligence. This powerful integration allows the lab to deliver highly accurate purity results for gold, silver, and platinum in less than one minute, a process that traditionally required more time and human intervention. According to Dr. Naseem Mohammed Rafi of Dubai Municipality, this innovation establishes a new global benchmark for speed, precision, and reliability in the sector.
A Strategic Partnership for Innovation
The development of the smart lab is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Dubai Central Laboratory and the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group. This partnership brings together municipal oversight and industry expertise from leading traders and manufacturers. First Stop Dubai’s Gold Souk
The first version of the precious metal testing device will be installed at the iconic Gold Souk in Deira. This marks the beginning of a planned phased rollout across key markets and strategic locations throughout the emirate. The initiative is part of the Dubai Municipality’s effort to build an integrated testing ecosystem that strengthens the gold and jewellery sector while ensuring consumer protection and confidence in the market. The system also features remote performance monitoring and self-calibration capabilities to ensure consistent and sustainable quality of results.
