In a landmark move for the region’s technology landscape, Abu Dhabi-based advanced technology group EDGE has signed a contract with global technology group e& to launch and operate the MENA region’s first Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) solution. The pioneering agreement, which aims to create safer and more efficient skies, was signed at GITEX GLOBAL 2025 by Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director & CEO of EDGE, and H.E. Masoud Shireef, CEO of Etisalat UAE.
Managing the Future of Urban Airspace
The advanced UTM solution is designed to serve as a central command and control system for unmanned aerial systems, commonly known as drones. It will provide real-time monitoring, deconfliction, and seamless traffic coordination for multiple drone operators simultaneously across Abu Dhabi’s airspace. This capability is crucial for preventing collisions and ensuring the safe integration of unmanned systems into urban environments. The system will empower government authorities with enhanced oversight while enabling a new wave of reliable drone-enabled services for communities.
A Catalyst for Smart City and National Security Goals
This initiative is a significant step forward in the UAE’s ambition to build smarter cities and aligns directly with the nation’s Industry 4.0 vision. By enabling the safe and large-scale deployment of autonomous systems, the UTM solution will support a wide range of applications, including emergency response, environmental monitoring, advanced logistics, and other smart city services. The programme directly supports the objectives of Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) by creating a framework for integrating next-generation technologies into daily life, ultimately strengthening national security and building more resilient government services.
