Egypt is set to advance its capabilities in the green automotive sector after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korea. The partnership is backed by a $10 million grant from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and will focus on developing advanced maintenance technology and skills for environmentally friendly vehicles across the country.
A Five-Year Strategic Development Plan
The five-year project, scheduled to conclude in 2030, will establish and upgrade four specialized training centers under the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s Productivity and Vocational Training Department (PVTD). The initiative is designed to build a robust ecosystem for the maintenance of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid cars, and natural gas-powered vehicles, positioning Egypt as a key player in the region’s sustainable transport transition.
Building Human Capital And Technical Infrastructure
The core of the project involves a dual focus on infrastructure and talent development. The $10 million grant will be used to equip the training centers with modern machine tools, simulation models, and diagnostic devices, including specialized equipment for repairing EV batteries. To build local expertise, the MoU outlines a comprehensive training program for Egyptian trainers and administrators, which includes an initial phase in South Korea followed by in-country training. Additionally, Korean technical volunteers will be dispatched to the centers to support the implementation and development of student activities.
A Call For Further Investment
During the announcement, Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir highlighted the project’s strategic importance and affirmed the ministry’s full support for its execution. He also extended an invitation to Korean investors to explore opportunities within Egypt’s automotive components manufacturing sector, particularly in tire and glass production, to serve both the large domestic market and international export channels.
