The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced a significant initiative to introduce robotic surgery technology into the country’s public hospitals. This move marks a major step in the government’s strategy to modernise healthcare services and leverage advanced technologies to improve patient outcomes across the nation.
The pilot programme is set to launch at the Nasser Institute Hospital, a prominent medical facility in the country. The plan was detailed by Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar following a meeting with representatives from medical technology firms Tecnoviv and Medbot.
A Strategic Leap in Healthcare Modernisation
Minister Abdel Ghaffar highlighted robotic surgery as a pivotal advancement in surgical practice, emphasizing its capacity for high precision and enhanced technical capabilities. He noted that the technology is expected to deliver improved clinical outcomes, minimise surgical errors, and significantly strengthen patient safety.
This initiative is part of the ministry’s firm commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies to elevate the overall quality of healthcare available to the public. Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar added that the technology shows immense potential in complex and delicate procedures, particularly in fields such as urology, obstetrics, gynaecology, and general surgery. Robotic-assisted procedures are also anticipated to reduce complications and shorten patient recovery times.
Phased Rollout and Regulatory Oversight
The initial phase will see the first robotic surgical system become operational at the Nasser Institute. Following the pilot, the ministry plans to gradually expand the technology’s availability to other major public hospitals throughout Egypt.
To ensure a structured and safe implementation, the minister has directed the formation of a national committee on robotic surgery. This committee will be composed of leading medical experts tasked with establishing the necessary regulatory frameworks and overseeing the phased integration of the technology into the national healthcare system.
Building Human Capital for a High-Tech Future
Recognising that advanced technology requires skilled professionals, the plan includes the establishment of a specialised training centre. Located at the Princess Fatima Academy for Medical Professional Education, the centre will focus on equipping Egyptian healthcare professionals with the skills required to operate robotic surgical systems.
The training will be designed to align with the highest international scientific and professional standards, ensuring that Egypt’s medical teams are prepared to effectively utilise this transformative technology.
