In a significant move to deepen financial inclusion across Egypt, leading fintech company Basata Holding for Financial Payments has announced a major expansion of its cash-in and cash-out services. The company has opened its vast network of over 120,000 points of sale (POS) to all mobile wallet users in the country, breaking its previous exclusivity with Vodafone Cash. This strategic development stands to impact over 40 million active mobile wallet holders, bridging the gap between the digital economy and everyday cash transactions.
From Vodafone Exclusive to Universal Access
This upgrade marks a pivotal shift in Basata’s service offering. Previously, only Vodafone Cash users could leverage the company’s extensive merchant network for deposits and withdrawals. Now, customers of any mobile wallet in Egypt can perform these transactions quickly and conveniently at any of Basata’s affiliated merchants.
The expansion effectively eliminates the restriction of conducting transactions at specific locations, enhancing convenience and accessibility for a massive segment of the population and solidifying Basata’s role as a key infrastructure player in Egypt’s digital payments ecosystem.
A Network of 120,000 Financial Hubs
With this latest update, Basata’s POS locations are being transformed into “mini financial hubs” that serve all mobile wallet users. This decentralized model reduces the reliance on traditional bank branches and ATMs, increasing the efficiency of financial transactions for both individuals and merchants.
This move builds upon Basata’s comprehensive payment ecosystem, which already includes more than 3,200 different services. These offerings cover essential daily needs, ranging from utility bill payments and educational fees to insurance services and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) installment solutions.
Commenting on the launch, Karim Shehata, CEO of Basata Holding for Financial Payments, said:
“Technology should serve as a tool to simplify people’s lives. In this spirit, we are pleased at Basata to expand our cash-in and cash-out services to cover all mobile wallets through our nationwide POS network. This step aims to enable faster and more flexible financial transactions, enhancing the overall user experience and making everyday payments smoother and more accessible anywhere across Egypt.”
Building on a Strategic Vodafone Partnership
Basata’s growth trajectory has been significantly bolstered since its strategic partnership with Vodafone Egypt in 2022. The partnership, which saw Vodafone acquire an approximate 10% stake in the company, has been a testament to Basata’s operational success and future potential.
Shehata added:
“This expansion reflects Basata’s ongoing commitment to delivering innovative payment solutions that serve various segments of society. We strive to reach the largest possible base of users and recognize the importance of this step in strengthening Basata’s role as one of the key players in the digital payments sector, not only in Egypt but also across the wider region.”
