Cairo-based circular economy platform Dawar by Environ Adapt has acquired a strategic stake in BekyaPay, a consumer-facing application for recyclable materials. The move aims to digitize the “first mile” of Egypt’s recycling value chain by integrating household-level data into Dawar’s established infrastructure.
Integrating The First Mile
Founded to formalize and bring traceability to fragmented waste recovery flows, Dawar has primarily operated as a digital infrastructure layer connecting collection points, aggregators, and traders. The platform has successfully recorded and verified over 90,000 tons of recyclable materials across 22 governorates in Egypt.
The acquisition of BekyaPay extends this digital oversight directly to the point of waste generation. BekyaPay connects over 30,000 users with a network of 500 collection points and 120 collectors, allowing households to exchange sorted recyclable materials for cash. By integrating this source-level data, Dawar can now capture material information before it enters informal trade networks, significantly strengthening visibility across the entire recycling process.
Strengthening Traceability for Compliance
This strategic expansion into the consumer segment is timed to meet growing regulatory demands. With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting standards tightening, the need for verifiable data from the source is becoming critical for corporations.
By capturing data at the household level, Dawar positions itself not just as a circular economy operator but as a key provider of compliance infrastructure. The enhanced traceability supports businesses in meeting their regulatory obligations and sustainability goals in an increasingly regulated market.
