Egypt’s HealNOSTiC Tackles Global Medication Errors With AI

5 Min Read

From its base in Egypt, founder Raghda Moussa is leading HealNOSTiC on a mission to reduce preventable harm in healthcare. The startup has developed a deep-tech platform using artificial intelligence to prevent medication errors, a problem that costs the global healthcare system an estimated $42 billion annually and affects millions of patients.

With the motto “Trusted Intelligence for Safer, Smarter Medication Decisions,” HealNOSTiC aims to support medical professionals in making better-informed and more personalized choices for patients.

A Unified Ecosystem for Healthcare

HealNOSTiC differentiates itself in the crowded health-tech space by creating an integrated, multi-target solution. The platform serves patients with mobile applications for real-time decision support, while also offering next-generation B2B platforms for clinicians, payers, and healthcare organizations.

At its core is the Intelligent Medication Checker, which provides instant prescription validation, risk prevention, proactive alerts based on scientific evidence, and personalized solutions supported by secure EMR profiles.

“Most foreign competitors operating in the MENA region focus exclusively on B2B solutions for institutions,” Moussa notes. “Very few address patients directly, or pharmaceutical companies, and none target all of them at once. That’s what makes us distinctive.”

While HealNOSTiC’s AI can significantly reduce errors by flagging dangerous drug interactions, the platform operates as a decision-support tool, with ultimate clinical and legal accountability remaining with healthcare professionals. This distinction works well in robust healthcare systems but raises questions in resource-constrained environments where an alert might be missed due to workload or lack of training.

Algorithmic transparency is another critical aspect. In evidence-based medicine, clinicians must be able to verify the sources behind a recommendation. HealNOSTiC addresses this by ensuring its validations and alerts are grounded in traceable data, avoiding the “black box” problem where AI’s reasoning is unclear.

Addressing Data Security Across Global Regulations

Operating in a highly regulated industry, HealNOSTiC prioritizes data security and compliance. “We use high-security encryption for all incoming and outgoing data,” Moussa explains. “We operate in a highly regulated market: we are already HIPAA-compliant in the United States and are working toward European compliance.”

Navigating the fragmented regulatory landscape, from HIPAA in the U.S. to GDPR in Europe and various frameworks across the MENA region, is a key challenge. This requires adapting technology, consent models, and data retention policies for each jurisdiction while balancing innovation with patient data rights.

Strategic Expansion into European Markets

HealNOSTiC is actively expanding its reach beyond the MENA region, targeting advanced healthcare ecosystems in Europe. “We are working with Swedish companies, have access to the Spanish market, and hope to enter Germany by the end of next year,” says Moussa.

This expansion requires more than just technical adaptation. The platform must be localized to accommodate different clinical protocols, therapeutic guidelines, and prescribing practices unique to each country. The success of this global push depends not only on the algorithm’s performance but also on the readiness of local healthcare systems to adopt and integrate the technology into their existing workflows.

Building Credibility Through Institutional Backing

To navigate complex healthcare markets, HealNOSTiC has built significant institutional credibility. Founder Raghda Moussa has forged collaborations with UN agencies like UNESCO, ITU, UN Women, and UNDP. In 2023, the startup was selected by UNDP to represent Egypt at the Mobile World Congress in Spain. That same year, Moussa was named among the top 100 women entrepreneurs in MENA by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The startup has also received national support from Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), which has provided office space and resources since 2020. This strong institutional network has been crucial for overcoming barriers and gaining access to global healthcare markets.
