Egypt’s Tax Authority Forms AI Task Force to Drive Digital Transformation

3 Min Read

The Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) has formed a dedicated task force to drive the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into the country’s tax system. The initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader digital transformation drive under Vision 2030 and the Egypt National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

By the Numbers

The push for AI integration is supported by strong growth in the country’s tax revenues:

  • 36% Revenue Growth: Egypt’s tax revenues surged by 36% in 2024, driven by strong taxpayer engagement.
  • 22.9% Projected Growth: Income tax revenues are projected to jump 22.9% year-on-year to EGP 1.44 trillion ($30b) in FY2025/2026.
  • 20.8% Projected Growth: Value-added tax (VAT) collections are forecast to rise 20.8% to EGP 967.9 billion ($19b).
  • 14.7% Projected Growth: Customs revenues are set to increase 14.7% to EGP 135.8 billion ($2.79b).

A New Phase of Digital Transformation

The formation of the new AI task force signals the next phase of digital transformation for the ETA. It follows directives from Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk and builds on the past five years of digital upgrades to the authority’s core systems and processes with partners such as EY, IBM, and Microsoft. The task force will focus on harnessing AI to enhance operational efficiency, improve the quality of taxpayer services, and implement intelligent analytics, all while upholding international standards of data security.

From University Pitches to Pilot Projects

The initiative was announced during the ETA’s participation in the IEEE Computer Society AI 2025 Caravan, which ran from April to July across leading Egyptian universities. During the program, ETA representatives presented several AI pilot project proposals, with a number of ideas being approved for implementation to address operational challenges and enhance taxpayer services.

Aligning with the National AI Strategy

The ETA’s initiative is a practical example of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2025-2030, which was announced by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in January 2025. The national strategy targets growing the ICT sector’s contribution to GDP to 7.7% by 2030, establishing over 250 AI companies, and developing 30,000 AI professionals, among other goals.
