G42 Introduces Groundbreaking Framework for Cross-Border Sovereign AI

3 Min Read

Abu Dhabi-based AI powerhouse G42 has announced a significant advancement in digital sovereignty with the launch of its Digital Embassies framework and Greenshield operating model. Unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the new initiative enables nations to deploy AI securely at scale while maintaining complete legal authority and control over their data, regardless of where the physical infrastructure is located.

Redefining Digital Sovereignty

The Digital Embassies framework establishes a novel approach by treating sovereignty like a flag that travels with a digital workload. Similar to how a diplomatic mission carries legal authority beyond its home borders, this model makes a nation’s jurisdiction portable and enforceable across agreed-upon digital environments, freeing it from the constraints of physical geography.

This shift is established through government-to-government legal constructs that define authority and sovereign rights upfront, ensuring national laws govern data and systems even when hosted abroad.

The Greenshield Operating Model

Greenshield serves as the operational layer that brings the Digital Embassies concept to life. Implemented by Core42, G42’s digital infrastructure arm, Greenshield translates a nation’s sovereign policies into concrete execution.

It applies consistent controls across all environments, governing critical areas such as identity, access, data handling, security, compliance, and auditability. This ensures that a nation’s control remains intact even as workloads move across different cloud and infrastructure configurations.

Bridging the Infrastructure Gap

As governments globally accelerate AI adoption, many face a significant gap between their ambitions and their infrastructure readiness. Building domestic sovereign clouds and data centers can take years, yet legal and security obligations apply from day one.

G42’s framework directly addresses this challenge, offering a secure and immediate pathway for nations to leverage advanced AI capabilities without waiting for long-term infrastructure projects to be completed. This has become a key part of the UAE’s digital proposition in bilateral negotiations, including recent discussions during a presidential visit to India.

A Global Vision Backed by Strategic Partnerships

The initiative is supported by G42’s strategic partnership with Microsoft, leveraging global cloud platforms to complement its own infrastructure. Greenshield is already implemented through Core42’s heterogeneous AI Cloud, a mesh of sovereign compute environments deployed across North America, Europe, and the UAE.

This framework also aligns with the UAE’s ambitious national projects, including the planned 5-gigawatt AI campus designed to serve nearly half the world’s population with low-latency computing, solidifying the nation’s position as a global AI infrastructure hub.
