In the midst of one of the most severe humanitarian and economic crises in its history, Gaza Sky Geeks (GSG) stands as a crucial pillar of Palestine’s technology ecosystem, cultivating digital skills and opportunities for a new generation. Originally founded in 2011 as a partnership between Mercy Corps and Google, the organization has become a symbol of resilience, proving that innovation can persist and create pathways to global connection even under the most challenging circumstances.
Innovation Against a Backdrop of Crisis
The context for GSG’s work is the near-total devastation of Gaza’s economy, with unemployment rates reaching approximately 80% and a sharp contraction in GDP. For technology professionals who rely on stable internet and power, the damaged infrastructure has presented immense barriers. It is within this landscape that GSG has adapted its mission to provide a virtual lifeline, offering training and employment opportunities that transcend physical borders.
Adapting and Evolving a Tech Ecosystem
What began as entrepreneurship bootcamps in Gaza evolved into Palestine’s first startup accelerator, eventually expanding its operations to the West Bank and East Jerusalem. After the conflict intensified in late 2023, GSG’s three vibrant offices and co-working spaces in Gaza were destroyed. In response, the organization pivoted to a fully virtual model, moving its core operations to the West Bank while ensuring its training programs remained accessible online to participants in Gaza, demonstrating remarkable resilience and commitment.
Building Talent and Empowering Companies
GSG operates on a dual front to strengthen the Palestinian tech sector. For individuals, it offers comprehensive training in high-demand digital skills, including coding, cloud computing, data analytics, and AI. This technical education is complemented by employability coaching and technical English instruction to prepare graduates for the global remote workforce. For businesses, GSG’s “Elevate” program provides tailored support to Palestinian tech companies, focusing on capacity building, marketing, and creating access to international markets to help them scale and compete globally.
A Vision for Rebuilding
Looking to the future, Gaza Sky Geeks is focused on the long-term revitalization of the region’s tech sector. Key priorities include rebuilding Gaza’s tech community by establishing co-working spaces with reliable infrastructure as soon as conditions permit. The organization also plans to provide critical psycho-social support and refresher training to help professionals re-engage with the workforce. Furthermore, GSG aims to empower marginalized groups by developing tailored programs for single mothers and people with disabilities, equipping them with the skills to rebuild their lives through digital work.

Through cutting-edge education, mentorship, and connections to global markets, it equips Palestinian youth and tech companies with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive.
