Google Meet Rolls Out New AI-Powered Virtual Makeup Feature

3 Min Read

Google Meet has launched a new AI-powered makeup filter, providing users with a convenient way to enhance their appearance during video calls. The feature is designed for professionals who may not have the time or desire to apply physical makeup before a meeting, positioning Google to better compete with rivals like Microsoft Teams and Zoom that offer similar capabilities.

Enhancing Professional Appearance

The new feature offers users a selection of 12 different virtual makeup styles. These options are integrated within the existing “Appearance” section, alongside the “Portrait touch-up” tools introduced in 2023 which provide complexion smoothing, under-eye lightening, and eye whitening. The feature is disabled by default, allowing users to opt-in before or during a call. Once a style is selected, Google Meet will remember the preference for future meetings, streamlining the user experience.

Advanced AI for a Seamless Experience

Google emphasizes the sophistication of the AI, which ensures the virtual makeup remains authentically applied to the user’s face regardless of movement. This advanced tracking prevents the filter from shifting or being misplaced, for example, when a user takes a sip of coffee. This attention to detail is aimed at creating a more natural and less distracting virtual appearance. The feature began its rollout on October 8 for both mobile and web users.

Relevance for the MENA Tech Scene

For the MENA region’s rapidly growing digital workforce, this update is more than just a cosmetic feature. In tech hubs like Dubai, Riyadh, and Cairo, where remote and hybrid work models are becoming standard, tools that help maintain a professional image with minimal effort are highly valuable. This feature directly addresses the needs of founders, executives, and tech professionals who are constantly in virtual meetings. Furthermore, it highlights the increasing integration of practical AI and AR into everyday business tools—a trend that MENA-based B2B and SaaS startups are closely watching and adopting to innovate within their own product offerings.
