Google Quietly Drops Eloquent, a New AI Dictation App That Works Offline

3 Min Read

Google has discreetly launched a new offline-first dictation app on iOS called “Google AI Edge Eloquent,” entering a competitive field populated by tools like Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper. The app is designed to transform spoken words into polished text without needing a constant internet connection.

Quick Facts

  • New offline-first AI dictation app on iOS.
  • Automatically removes filler words and cleans text.
  • Uses on-device Gemma models for local processing.

How Eloquent Transforms Speech into Text

Once downloaded, Eloquent requires users to install its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models to enable offline functionality. The app provides a live transcription as you speak. After pausing, its AI automatically filters out filler words such as “um” and “ah,” cleaning up the raw dictation.

Users can then refine the output with one-click options like “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long.” For more powerful text cleanup, an optional cloud mode can be activated, which uses Google’s Gemini models for processing.

The company’s App Store description states, “Google AI Edge Eloquent is an advanced dictation app engineered to bridge the gap between natural speech and professional, ready-to-use text. Unlike standard dictation software that transcribes stumbles and filler words verbatim, Eloquent utilizes AI to capture your intended meaning.”

Beyond Transcription: Customization and Android Plans

To improve accuracy, Eloquent can import specific keywords, names, and jargon from a user’s Gmail account and allows for adding custom words to its vocabulary. The app also keeps a searchable history of all transcription sessions, providing stats like words-per-minute and total words spoken.

While currently an iOS exclusive, the app’s description points to an upcoming Android version. It mentions “seamless Android integration,” suggesting it could function as a default keyboard for system-wide use. A floating button feature, similar to that used by competitors, is also planned for easy access across the Android operating system.

What This Means for MENA’s Multilingual Market

For founders, executives, and professionals in the MENA region, an effective offline dictation tool could significantly boost productivity. The ability to capture thoughts and draft emails on the go, without relying on spotty connectivity, is a clear advantage.

The true test for Eloquent’s regional relevance will be its support for Arabic. If Google incorporates its advanced language models to accurately understand the nuances and various dialects of Arabic, the app could become an indispensable tool for the region’s booming tech ecosystem. On-device processing is particularly beneficial for privacy and for handling a language with complex morphology like Arabic.
