Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of the Qatar Foundation, has unveiled a pioneering initiative designed to reshape academic research through artificial intelligence. The project, named HIKMA (Human-Inspired Knowledge by Machine Agents), aims to automate the entire scientific paper lifecycle under strict ethical human supervision.
An End-to-End Research Pipeline
The HIKMA project introduces a comprehensive, end-to-end system that integrates every stage of the academic process into a single, continuous pipeline. This ambitious model handles everything from initial topic generation and automated writing to AI-driven peer review, revision, and even the creation of presentation materials, all while being guided and validated by human experts.
HikmaXiv The Open-Access AI Repository
At the heart of the initiative is HikmaXiv, an open-access digital repository poised to become the world’s largest archive for AI-generated and human-reviewed research. Going beyond just the final paper, HikmaXiv provides a transparent record of the entire research journey by storing manuscripts alongside their underlying datasets, AI-generated revisions, and peer-review notes. This allows scholars to trace the evolution of ideas through dynamic human-machine collaboration.
Championing Ethical Human-in-the-Loop Collaboration
Unlike systems that aim to replace researchers, HIKMA is built on a hybrid “human-in-the-loop” model. This approach ensures that human experts audit, refine, and ultimately approve the AI’s work before publication. This ethical framework positions AI as an amplifier of human intellect rather than a substitute, maintaining rigorous academic standards and fostering trust in AI-assisted discovery.
Global Vision with a Regional Focus
With this launch, HBKU joins an elite group of global institutions, including Stanford University, experimenting with autonomous agents in science. The HIKMA project also carries a distinct regional focus, with plans to support multilingual research and specifically advance Arabic-language science.
