Iraq’s Green Gold Tackles Drought With Innovative Waste-To-Soil Solution

4 Min Read

In response to Iraq’s severe water scarcity and escalating drought, which has decimated over 70% of its agricultural land, local entrepreneur Marwa Al-Nuaimi has developed a groundbreaking solution. Her initiative, Green Gold (GG), is tackling the environmental crisis head-on by transforming organic waste into a nutrient-rich, drought-resistant soil, offering a beacon of hope for the nation’s struggling agricultural sector.

From Household Waste To Fertile Soil

The concept for Green Gold was born out of necessity. Al-Nuaimi began her work from home, collecting food scraps and organic refuse from her own household and those of her neighbors. The initial stages were challenging, as she noted the difficulties of the four-month fermentation process. “I started from inside the house, collecting waste from my home and my neighbors’ homes,” Al-Nuaimi explained. “This caused significant problems with my family due to the smell of the waste during its fermentation.”

Her perseverance paid off. After the lengthy fermentation period, the resulting product was sent for official testing. “I took the product to the Agricultural Research Department, and the result was 80% organic material suitable for use as agricultural soil,” she said. “This was like a celebration for me and the motivation I needed to complete the project.”

A Dual-Impact Solution For A Greener Iraq

Green Gold’s innovative model addresses two of Iraq’s most pressing environmental issues simultaneously. Firstly, by diverting and recycling food and organic waste, the initiative actively reduces landfill-related pollution. Secondly, the end product is a powerful tool for sustainable agriculture, creating an organic soil and a complementary liquid solution that helps plants thrive in arid conditions with minimal water.
This approach not only provides a sustainable alternative for farmers but also contributes to a circular economy, turning a national waste problem into a valuable agricultural asset.

Cultivating A New Generation Of Green Entrepreneurs

Al-Nuaimi’s vision extends far beyond product development. Green Gold has become a platform for environmental education and youth empowerment, aiming to cultivate a broader culture of sustainability in Iraq. The initiative has launched extensive public engagement campaigns to raise awareness about the risks of pollution and promote green practices.

“The GG project was not limited to waste recycling,” Al-Nuaimi stated. “We established large afforestation campaigns and succeeded in planting more than ten thousand trees. In addition, we trained more than 250 young men and women from public and private universities on green entrepreneurship and field marketing.” This commitment to community building and education has earned the project international recognition, with Al-Nuaimi representing Iraq at events in the United States and Amsterdam.

About Green Gold
