Meta wants to turn scrolling into shopping with a new layer of artificial intelligence. Announced at Shoptalk 2026, the social media giant is testing a feature that uses generative AI to summarize user reviews and extract key product details when users click on an ad or visit a brand’s website through Facebook and Instagram.
Quick Facts
-
AI summarizes product reviews on Facebook and Instagram.
-
One-tap checkout powered by Stripe and PayPal.
-
Affiliate program expands to Amazon, eBay, and Temu.
Enhancing E-Commerce on Social Platforms with Generative AI
Meta is moving to replicate a model popularized by Amazon in 2023, deploying AI to distill hundreds of customer reviews into an easily digestible paragraph.
When consumers click a product link, a new pop-up experience will present a “what people are saying” summary, complete with a brief introduction and key bullet points.
Beyond reviews, this interface will display brand details, recommended items, and active sales. On individual product pages, a direct “Add to Cart” button will appear, keeping users engaged within the Meta ecosystem rather than bouncing to an external browser.
Frictionless Payments and One-Tap Checkout Integration
Converting interest into actual sales requires removing friction, a challenge Meta is addressing through an updated checkout flow. Built in partnership with payment heavyweights Stripe and PayPal, the new system enables consumers to complete a purchase with a single tap.
Advertisers retain control over their preferred checkout partner, meaning brands can fulfill orders independently while the consumer never leaves the Facebook or Instagram app.
Meta is also developing future integrations with Adyen and Shopify, expanding the infrastructure for social commerce.
Expanding Affiliate Partners for Content Creators
Facing intense competition from TikTok, Meta is upgrading its product discovery tools for creators. A major update to the platform’s affiliate program broadens the pool of retail partners available on Facebook.
In the United States, creators can now link to Amazon, eBay, and Temu. Global expansion includes Mercado Libre in Latin America and Shopee in Asia. Later this year, Instagram will begin testing similar affiliate structures with Amazon and Shopee, allowing partners to choose featured products and set commission rates.
Additionally, Instagram Reels creators will gain access to business product catalogs across 22 countries, simplifying the process of finding and monetizing products featured in short-form video content.
Implications for Social Commerce in the MENA Region
For founders, retailers, and direct-to-consumer startups in the Middle East and North Africa, Meta’s push into AI-driven social commerce offers a more efficient path to customer acquisition. With social media penetration in the GCC among the highest globally, reducing friction from discovery to purchase is critical for local merchants.
Regional brands heavily rely on Instagram and Facebook ads to drive top-line revenue. The introduction of AI summaries builds immediate trust without requiring users to sift through comments, while the integrated one-tap checkout flow could drastically reduce cart abandonment rates. As global partnerships with Shopify and payment gateways expand, MENA startups utilizing these platforms will likely capture higher conversion yields directly from their social campaigns.
