The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award (MBRKA) has officially opened its global call for nominations for the upcoming 2026 cycle. Based in Dubai, the initiative continues to position the UAE as a central hub for scientific recognition, honoring innovators, scientists, and institutions driving measurable global progress.

Recognizing Global Tech and Science Pioneers

Since its inception, the award has identified and honored key figures driving massive shifts in global technology and science. Past laureates include World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, both recognized for building platforms that connected billions and democratized global information access.

The award has consistently highlighted critical medical and biological breakthroughs. In 2022, the initiative honored scientists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their foundational mRNA research. This specific work enabled rapid COVID-19 vaccine development and subsequently earned the duo the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023.

The initiative also previously recognized Dr. Zhang Yongzhen, who shared the first COVID-19 genomic sequence, alongside the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation for delivering advanced medical care.

Championing AI, Space, and Digital Education

Recent cycles have heavily emphasized artificial intelligence, deep tech, and space exploration. The 2024 cohort honored Dr. Andrew Ng for his work expanding digital tech education and making complex artificial intelligence concepts accessible to millions of students globally.

The initiative also recognized Emirati theoretical physicist Dr. Ahmed Eid Almheiri for his work in theoretical physics, alongside psychological disorder specialists Dr. David Clark and Dr. Anke Ehlers. His Excellency Juma Al Majid was also recognized for his lifelong commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

At an institutional level, the UAE has used the platform to highlight domestic and international milestones. The Emirates Mars Mission (Hope Probe) previously received the award for its contribution to global space data, marking the first Arab mission to the Red Planet.
