The Kingdom of Morocco has announced a significant investment of 36 million dirhams ($3.9 million) to accelerate the digital transformation of its vital handicrafts sector. The initiative is a collaborative effort established through agreements between the State Secretariat for Handicrafts, the Chambers of Handicrafts and their Federation, and the Digital Development Agency.
This strategic push aims to modernize a sector that is a cornerstone of the nation’s economy and cultural heritage.
A Strategic Digital Overhaul
The core of the digital transformation plan involves establishing a modern digital infrastructure for the artisan community. Key components include the introduction of a professional artisan ID card and the creation of a comprehensive National Artisan Registry.
These measures are designed to formalize the sector, streamline administrative procedures, and improve overall efficiency. The plan also includes the digitalization of all services provided by the Chambers of Handicrafts and their affiliated organizations, making it easier for artisans to access support and resources.
Boosting a Cornerstone of the Economy
The handicrafts sector is a major economic driver in Morocco, employing 22% of the national workforce and contributing 7% to the country’s GDP. The industry has also seen a 7.6% increase in exports and its sales generate 10% of all foreign exchange earnings from tourism.
By investing in digital tools and platforms, Morocco aims to enhance the productivity of its artisans, formalize their economic activities, and ultimately expand their access to both local and international markets, capitalizing on the sector’s significant growth potential.
