Morocco Launches Major Initiative To Modernize 50,000 Neighborhood Shops

3 Min Read

Morocco’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has signed a landmark agreement to digitize 50,000 neighborhood retail stores across the country. The initiative, revealed during the “All for Morocco’s Trade 2030” seminar, involves a partnership with Z.systems, implemented by contractor Trom, to equip small merchants with advanced digital solutions as part of the Kingdom’s broader economic development strategy.

A Strategic Push Towards Modernization

This large-scale project aligns with Morocco’s national goals of strengthening the competitiveness of its local commerce sector, particularly in preparation for hosting the 2030 World Cup. The Ministry emphasized that the initiative is guided by King Mohammed VI’s vision to position trade as a key driver of economic growth and social stability. By modernizing traditional retail, the government aims to enhance the resilience of local businesses and bridge the technological gap between small shops and large-scale supply chains.

How Z.systems Will Empower Merchants

Under the agreement, Z.systems will provide shopkeepers with a suite of digital tools designed to improve efficiency and profitability. These solutions will enable direct connectivity with major brands and distributors, streamlining the supply chain. The platform will also feature integrated loyalty programs to help small stores build customer retention and a performance-linked e-wallet system to promote financial inclusion and digital payments among merchants.

A Wider Ecosystem for Digital Transformation

The partnership with Z.systems is part of a multi-faceted government effort to foster a tech-enabled trade ecosystem. The announcement complements a parallel agreement signed with WOLIZ Solution, which aims to expand digital payment access to 20,000 stores and roll out the WOLIZ Pro application to 90,000 merchants nationwide. Together, these initiatives signal Morocco’s strong commitment to building an inclusive and modern digital economy.
