Morocco has taken a significant step towards bolstering its digital and energy sovereignty with the signing of two strategic agreements in Dakhla. Overseen by the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the initiatives aim to establish a green data center and a specialized AI institute, positioning the nation’s southern provinces as a pivotal hub for sustainable innovation in Africa.
The agreements were formalized during the MDSáhara Forum and represent a major milestone in the integrated development of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region. The projects underscore a national strategy focused on leveraging clean energy and advanced technologies to drive economic progress.
Building a Low-Carbon Digital Hub
The first agreement launches the “Igoudar Dajla” green data center, a state-of-the-art digital platform set to be powered entirely by renewable energy. This project is designed to provide both national and international data hosting, storage, and processing services.
The facility will integrate advanced cloud infrastructure with natural cooling solutions to significantly reduce energy consumption. This approach aims to enhance Morocco’s competitiveness in the global data industry while structuring a local value chain around cloud services, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The initiative is poised to attract new investment and innovation, transforming Dakhla into a key low-carbon digital hub.
Cultivating AI and Energy Expertise
The second agreement establishes the Jazari Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Energy Transition in Dakhla. This academic and scientific institution will develop advanced training programs in algorithms, big data, and energy efficiency management.
The Jazari Institute will host research and experimentation platforms for companies looking to integrate AI solutions to optimize their performance. It will also serve as a support space for innovative startups, engaging students and researchers in applied projects that address regional needs in renewable energy, seawater desalination, green hydrogen, and the development of smart energy grids.
