Najran University Secures Dual US Patents For AI And Renewable Energy Innovations

3 Min Read

Najran University has announced it has been granted two patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for significant innovations in medical artificial intelligence and renewable energy technology. The achievements underscore the university’s growing role in Saudi Arabia’s research and development landscape and its alignment with the goals of Vision 2030.

AI-Powered Breakthrough in Patient Care

One of the patents recognizes a pioneering AI system designed to evaluate and monitor the consciousness levels of patients in a coma. Developed by researchers Dr. Ali bin Saeed Al-Qahtani and Dr. Saeed bin Saad Al-Ahmari from the university’s College of Computer Science and Information Systems, the technology utilizes AI and computer vision to analyze eye movement, sensory interactions, and audio responses.

The system automatically and accurately correlates these responses with the Glasgow Coma Scale, providing a continuous, objective assessment of a patient’s condition. This represents a major advancement in intensive care, enabling the system to issue automatic alerts if a patient’s consciousness deteriorates, thereby facilitating faster medical intervention and potentially improving recovery outcomes. The technology is designed for easy integration with existing hospital systems at a low cost, making it accessible for healthcare facilities worldwide.

Enhancing Renewable Energy Efficiency

In a separate development, the university secured a patent for an advanced engineering innovation in the field of voltage booster converters. This technology is designed to significantly increase the efficiency of renewable energy systems, offering a practical solution to sustainability challenges.

By enhancing the performance of clean energy infrastructure, the invention contributes to greater reliability of electrical grids and supports the global transition towards sustainable power sources. This patent highlights the university’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s strategic objectives in the renewable energy sector.

Driving Innovation For Vision 2030

Both achievements, supported by the university’s Institutional Funding Program under the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, reflect Najran University’s leadership in scientific research. By fostering national talent and competing on a global stage, the university is actively contributing to the Kingdom’s diversification and knowledge-based economy goals as outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
