Oman is set to mark a major milestone in its technological development with the planned launch of OmanSat-1, the nation’s first national communications satellite. The strategic initiative aims to strengthen digital sovereignty and establish an independent, space-based communications infrastructure, significantly reducing reliance on foreign satellite operators.

The OmanSat-1 project is a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to enhance the security and resilience of its national telecommunications services. Built on Airbus’ advanced OneSat digital platform, OmanSat-1 will feature state-of-the-art, in-orbit reconfiguration capabilities. This technology allows for unprecedented operational flexibility, enabling the satellite’s mission and coverage to be adapted in real-time to meet evolving market demands and providing a significant competitive advantage over traditional systems.
The satellite is designed to provide extensive coverage across Oman, its exclusive economic waters, and key international regions, including parts of the Middle East, East Africa, and Asia. It will support a wide range of services, from high-speed broadband connectivity to secure communications for critical sectors such as oil and gas, aviation, and maritime transport.
A Strategic Shift for Oman’s Space Sector
This initiative represents a pivotal shift for Oman, transforming the nation from a consumer of international satellite capacity into a key regional operator and service provider. Operations will be managed by Space Communication Technologies (SCT), a company wholly owned by the Oman Investment Authority. A dedicated project management office is overseeing the implementation and readiness of all ground infrastructure to support the satellite’s operations.
Ground delivery of OmanSat-1 is scheduled for June 2028, with the commencement of commercial services anticipated by May 2029. The project is a central component of Oman’s broader ambitions to cultivate a thriving domestic space sector, which includes fostering local talent, supporting space-focused startups, and expanding the portfolio of space-related services offered from the Sultanate.
