Pets on Jets: How the UAE is Cashing in on the Booming Furry Travel Market

3 Min Read

As global pet ownership reaches record levels, more travelers than ever are taking to the skies with their animal companions, fueling a multi-billion dollar industry. The UAE, and Dubai in particular, has emerged as a key hub in this growing market, with specialized companies launching to cater to pet “parents” who see their animals as an extension of the family.

By the Numbers

The pet travel industry is experiencing explosive growth, driven by a cultural shift in how people view their pets:

  • $5.3 Billion: The projected value of the pet travel industry by 2034, more than doubling from $2.4 billion in 2024.
  • 30% Increase: The growth in bookings for pet relocation company Paw Pals over the past six years.
  • $10,000 – $15,000: The approximate cost per hour to charter a private jet for a pet and its owner.

A New Breed of Travel Company

This growth is driven by the rising “humanization” of pets and higher disposable incomes. Recognizing this trend, Dubai-based entrepreneur Gunawab Wahab launched Fly JetPets in March, a niche firm that arranges private and shared charter jets for pets and their owners.

“I understand the anxiety of pet ‘parents’, who see their animals as an extension of their families,” Wahab told AGBI. “They don’t want the stress and risk of putting them in the hold, yet few commercial airlines allow pets in the cabin”.

The company, which partnered with private jet charter firm Jetex, has seen significant demand, receiving around 50 to 60 monthly inquiries initially, and a total of 250 in a recent two-week period as people returned from summer holidays.

The High Cost of Furry Comfort

While most commercial airlines require pets to travel in the cargo hold, a growing number of owners are opting for the luxury and safety of private travel, despite the high cost. Chartering a private jet for a pet can cost $10,000 to $15,000 per hour, while a shared charter is a cheaper option at around $10,000 to $40,000 for a single journey.

“People think it’s extravagant but if you fly business class on Emirates for your holidays, which many do, the cost is comparable,” said Kate Lindley, relocations manager at Dubai-based pet-sitting company Paw Pals. For many, especially those with pets that have health conditions, the extra cost is worth it to reduce the stress and risk of travel.
