Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has participated in a landmark USD 500 million funding round for Vast, a US-based aerospace company developing next-generation commercial space stations. The investment signals a significant move by the sovereign wealth fund into the burgeoning private space exploration sector.
The Landmark Investment
The substantial funding round was led by Balerion Space Ventures and includes a mix of USD 300 million in Series A equity and USD 200 million in debt.
Alongside QIA, the round saw participation from a diverse group of prominent investors, including IQT, Mitsui & Co., Ltd, MUFG, Nikon Corporation, Stellar Ventures, Space Capital, and Earthrise Ventures.
Pioneering the New Space Economy
Founded in 2021 by Jed McCaleb, Vast is at the forefront of developing commercial space infrastructure, most notably its artificial-gravity habitats. The company’s Haven series of space stations aims to enable long-term human presence and research in space, setting the stage for a robust commercial economy in low-Earth orbit and beyond.
Vast’s ambitious strategy includes creating habitats not only for Earth’s orbit but also for future missions to the Moon and Mars, strengthening both commercial and national defense capabilities in space.
Charting a Course for Orbit
The new capital will be instrumental in expanding Vast’s facilities, growing its team, and accelerating its key projects. The company is targeting a 2027 launch for its first space station, Haven-1, and is also slated to conduct a private astronaut mission in partnership with NASA.
Furthermore, the funds will support the development of Haven-2, Vast’s proposed successor to the International Space Station (ISS), which aims to ensure a continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit for the United States and its international partners.
