Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Chairman of Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), provided key insights into the long-term, strategic vision that has propelled Qatar to the forefront of the global sports industry. Addressing an audience of global leaders at the ‘Saudi House’, Al-Khelaifi detailed how patient capital and a focus on building sustainable ecosystems have been central to QSI’s success over the past two decades.
His Excellency’s participation alongside H.R.H. Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sport, underscored the growing influence of the MENA region in shaping the future of international sports and entertainment.
The PSG Transformation A €4 Billion Case Study
Al-Khelaifi highlighted the acquisition and development of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) as a prime example of QSI’s investment philosophy. When QSI acquired the club in 2011, it was valued at approximately €70 million. Today, its valuation exceeds €4 billion, demonstrating the immense value created through strategic, long-term investment.
“At PSG, we have built a global brand from a local French club,” stated Al-Khelaifi. “We have focused on every single element of the club – from the men’s and women’s first teams, to the academy; to our foundation and off-pitch commercial business.” He emphasized that this holistic approach, backed by patient capital, was essential for building a commercially successful and culturally significant institution.
Building a Global Tour From Scratch
Shifting from club ownership to creating an entirely new global sports circuit, Al-Khelaifi pointed to the establishment of Premier Padel in 2022. In just over a year, QSI, in partnership with the International Padel Federation, has transformed the professional landscape of one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
The tour now boasts over 25 tournaments across five continents, attracting top players and significant commercial partnerships. This venture serves as a powerful case study in identifying a high-growth sector and rapidly building a global brand and professional ecosystem around it.
Beyond The Pitch The World Cup’s Lasting Impact
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was presented not just as a successful tournament, but as a catalyst for profound national development. Al-Khelaifi explained that the event accelerated Qatar’s national vision, delivering significant infrastructure and a lasting legacy that sets a new standard for mega-event hosting.
He argued that the true return on investment in sports extends far beyond financial metrics, creating positive socio-economic benefits, promoting healthy lifestyles, and uniting communities on a global scale. “Sport has the power to inspire young people and drive positive change in society,” he noted, articulating a core tenet of Qatar’s investment strategy.
A Vision for Patient and Strategic Capital
Throughout his address, Al-Khelaifi consistently contrasted QSI’s approach with short-term, purely profit-driven investments. He championed a model where financial returns are intertwined with community-building, brand development, and long-term sustainability.
“For anyone entering the sports industry, you need to have a long-term vision,” he advised. “You need to be patient and you should not be looking for a quick return. Sport is a very emotional and passionate business, and it is also one of the best investments you can make in the world.”
