RAK Ceramics Deploys The Nation’s First Commercial Self-Driving Trucks in UAE

3 Min Read

In a significant step for logistics technology in the region, RAK Ceramics, a multinational ceramics manufacturer, has launched the UAE’s first commercial fleet of self-driving electric trucks. The deployment, located in Ras Al Khaimah’s Al Hamra Industrial Zone, is the result of a strategic partnership with Moscow-based autonomous transport developer Evocargo.

A Landmark Partnership In Logistics

The new autonomous fleet will be used to transport cargo between RAK Ceramics’ various operational facilities within the industrial zone. This initiative leverages Evocargo’s innovative robots-as-a-service model, which provides businesses with subscription-based access to autonomous vehicles. This approach eliminates significant upfront capital costs, making advanced logistics technology more accessible and scalable for commercial enterprises. The deployment serves as a key case study for Evocargo’s expansion in the UAE and the wider MENA region while supporting RAK Ceramics’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments through zero-emission operations.

Inside The Evocargo N1 Technology

Each Evocargo N1 truck has a two-tonne lifting capacity, can accommodate up to six EUR-pallets, and operates at speeds of up to 25 kilometres per hour. The vehicles offer a range of 200 kilometres per charge, with charging times varying from 40 minutes to six hours. At the core of the N1 is a fifth-generation autopilot system powered by an AI-driven multi-sensor perception system. Using LIDARs, sonars, and cameras, the trucks process real-time data to navigate and adapt instantly to road conditions. A four-layer safety framework, including computer vision, an automatic diagnostic system, a remote-stop system, and a standby pneumatic braking system, ensures high reliability and operational safety in industrial environments.

RAK’s Growing Hub For Smart Mobility

This deployment is part of a broader push by Ras Al Khaimah to establish itself as a testing ground for advanced mobility solutions, positioning the emirate as a key innovation hub alongside Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This initiative aligns with the emirate’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan 2030. Recent announcements include plans for robotaxi and robobus pilots by Chinese firm WeRide, as well as a partnership with Joby Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure to launch electric air taxi services by 2027.
