Response Innovation Lab Unveils Made By Syrians Initiative To Bridge Humanitarian Gaps

3 Min Read

The Syria Response Innovation Lab (RIL) has launched “Made by Syrians,” a strategic initiative designed to amplify Syrian-led innovations and connect them with global donors, decision-makers, and humanitarian agencies. By shifting the role of Syrians from mere implementers to architects of humanitarian solutions, the program seeks to address critical challenges in education, water, sanitation, and climate change adaptation across the country and its diaspora.

Empowering Local Solutions For Local Challenges

The initiative operates as an Open Challenge call, inviting a diverse range of participants—including startups, SMEs, students, and diaspora experts—to propose context-ready solutions. Unlike traditional top-down humanitarian interventions, Made by Syrians prioritizes “localized innovation,” ensuring that those closest to the crisis are leading the design of the response. The program provides selected innovators with comprehensive technical support and global exposure through dedicated “Pitch Days” to facilitate partnerships and scaling.

Spotlight On Syrian Led Tech And Sustainability

The first cohort of the initiative features several high-impact projects that leverage technology to solve systemic issues. Among the highlighted innovations are:

  • Water & Agriculture: WaterSmart Agriculture utilizes hydrogel technology to enhance soil water retention, while Ray-Sat employs remote sensing and digital tools for smart irrigation management.
  • Health & WASH: ParaChem offers advanced water treatment solutions for cleaner community access, and the Mursad Platform by Team Al Taawun uses data analysis for early warning and public health awareness.
  • Education & Climate: The Skyline – IBDA Platform focuses on digital skills development for fresh graduates, while Al-Karma uses environmental storytelling to foster climate awareness among children.

A Global Network For Fragile Contexts

The program is part of the broader Response Innovation Lab network, which is co-led by international NGOs including World Vision, Save the Children, Oxfam, and the Danish Refugee Council. By brokering partnerships between local social enterprises and the traditional humanitarian system, RIL aims to create a sustainable ecosystem where Syrian expertise can be tested and scaled. The initiative is currently seeking global collaborators to help these locally-led ideas achieve transformative impact within communities affected by crisis and fragility.
