4 Min Read

Saudi Arabia is taking a central role on the global technology stage, co-hosting a high-level event on Artificial Intelligence Governance during the 80th United Nations General Assembly session in New York. The initiative, led by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), in partnership with the Republic of Kenya and the UN, underscores the Kingdom’s growing influence in shaping international AI policy and frameworks. The event marks a significant step in the global conversation around responsible AI development and deployment.

Shaping Global AI Policy

The Kingdom’s participation in the UN General Assembly event solidifies its position as a key architect of global AI policy. This move is part of a broader strategy that has seen Saudi Arabia partner with multiple global NGOs, the UN, and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) to promote inclusive and responsible AI. Recently, SDAIA played a crucial role in developing the world’s first international report on AI safety, a collaborative effort involving 30 countries, the UN, the European Union, and the OECD, further demonstrating its commitment to establishing global guardrails for emerging technologies.

Launching the Global Dialogue

A centerpiece of the week’s activities is the official launch of the first Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance. This long-term initiative, scheduled to take place in 2026, aims to shape global policy on inclusive and accountable AI governance frameworks for international cooperation. The Saudi delegation, led by SDAIA Vice President Engineer Sami bin Abdullah Moquim, includes a range of strategic and technical experts. Their participation will feature sessions on leveraging AI for the public good, localising the Global Digital Charter, and developing inclusive digital economies.

Aligning With Vision 2030

This international engagement is deeply aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. By taking a proactive role in AI governance, the Kingdom aims to reinforce its position as a trusted global partner in developing ethical standards and regulatory frameworks. This initiative leverages the nation’s advanced technological capabilities for global humanitarian benefit while simultaneously building sustainable economic prosperity. The high-level political support for this direction is evident, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman serving as the Chairman of SDAIA’s Board of Directors.
