Saudi Arabia is taking a central role in the global conversation on artificial intelligence and its impact on language by hosting an international symposium in Seoul, South Korea. The event, titled “Translation and Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges,” is being organized by the King Abdulaziz Public Library and will take place on September 30th at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as part of the 11th King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Award for Translation.
Fostering International Collaboration
The symposium brings together leading experts and academics from Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and South Korea to address the rapid evolution of the translation industry. The event will commence with opening remarks from Faisal bin Abdulrahman bin Muammar, the general supervisor of the King Abdulaziz Public Library, and Park Jeong-woon, president of Hankuk University, setting a collaborative tone for the discussions.
Addressing Key Industry Challenges
Discussions will delve into the most pressing issues at the intersection of AI and translation. The agenda includes sessions on the most effective emerging AI tools for translators, practical applications for optimizing human-machine workflows, and the development of frameworks for responsible technology adoption. Yahya Al-Zahrani will present on new AI translation tools, while Woon Baek will discuss strategies for improving efficiency.
Navigating Ethical and Linguistic Complexities
A significant portion of the symposium is dedicated to the ethical and cultural nuances of AI-powered translation. Buthaina Al-Thuwaini will lead a critical discussion titled, “Who owns the translated text? Ethical issues in the age of AI,” tackling complex questions of copyright and intellectual property. The afternoon sessions, moderated by Mai Al-Rashed, will focus specifically on the challenges of Arabic-Korean translation, with former UN Arabic Translation Chief Mohammed Didaoui offering insights on the responsible use of AI in cross-cultural contexts.
