Saudi Arabia is making a decisive operational adjustment to pull more maritime trade volume into its eastern maritime hubs. The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has officially extended the storage fee exemption period for incoming empty containers from 10 to 20 days at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and Jubail Commercial Port.
Quick Facts
- Exemption window increased from 10 to 20 days.
- Applies to Dammam and Jubail commercial ports.
- Aims to increase empty container availability for exports.
Optimizing the Eastern Region Supply Chain
The structural adjustment is a calculated move to solve a common bottleneck in regional shipping: container availability. By doubling the time shipping lines can store empty containers without incurring fees, Mawani expects to directly incentivize maritime operators to redirect their assets.
Specifically, the initiative targets empty containers currently sitting in other Gulf ports, encouraging operators to move them to Dammam and Jubail. This ensures a consistent, high-volume supply of equipment ready for Saudi-based exporters.
For the kingdom’s export sector, container readiness is a critical operational metric. Maintaining a steady flow of empty containers removes delays in the outbound supply chain, allowing manufacturers and logistics startups to scale their shipping operations with greater predictability.
Strategic Push for Maritime Competitiveness
The fee exemption aligns directly with Saudi Arabia’s broader macroeconomic targets outlined in the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which prioritizes turning the kingdom into an elite global logistics hub.
Mawani President Suliman Al Mazroua highlighted the tactical nature of the extended window.
“This is a key enabler to motivate shipping lines to increase the flow of empty containers to Saudi ports,” Al Mazroua stated.
He noted that the authority will continue developing targeted operational initiatives designed to strengthen port competitiveness and elevate Saudi Arabia’s status as a central logistics center for the region.
