Following the recent inscription of the Faya Palaeolandscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Government of Sharjah has officially opened applications for its Short-Term Research Grant. Supervised by the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, the initiative invites international scientists to submit proposals for specialized one-year projects at the historic site.
Quick Facts
- AED 100,000 available per short-term research project.
- Part of the broader AED 2 million funding initiative.
- Application submission deadline set for March 31, 2026.
Funding Heritage Science and Digital Modeling in the UAE
The newly announced Short-Term Research Grant is a core component of the Faya Research Grant Programme, a funding initiative running from 2026 to 2028 with a total allocation of AED 2 million. Designed to support long-term heritage science in the emirate, the program allocates AED 600,000 specifically for short-term projects. Six grants will be awarded over the three-year cycle, distributing two per year.
Research parameters extend beyond traditional fieldwork. The authority targets projects that incorporate digital heritage modeling, 3D imaging, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and immersive technologies like virtual and augmented reality. These tools will be used to reconstruct ancient sites and engage the public.
Additional focus areas include palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, site monitoring, risk mapping, and material analysis. The effort aligns with Sharjah’s broader objectives to advance global scientific stewardship, supported by HH Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, who serves as Ambassador of the Faya World Heritage Property.
Eligibility and Scientific Collaboration Criteria
The grants target specific prehistoric periods, focusing on human occupation and environmental change between 200,000 and 6,000 years ago during the Palaeolithic and Neolithic eras.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and demonstrate a strong publication record in international peer-reviewed journals. The program mandates that experienced local and international joint research teams lead the projects. Proposals must outline fully independent research, as continuations or sub-projects of existing international programs will not qualify.
Beyond new fieldwork, the authority encourages researchers to examine its existing collections—which include human remains, faunal material, and lithic artifacts—through new analytical approaches. Funding will cover specialized analysis, publications, and technical outputs, with infrastructure and logistical support provided locally.
