Sohar University has laid the foundation stone for a new Innovation Center, a pioneering project valued at OMR 4.7 million. The ceremony, held under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, marks a significant step in the university’s mission to advance scientific research, foster entrepreneurship, and create a vibrant innovation ecosystem for students and researchers in the Sultanate.
A First for Oman’s Private Education Sector
The new center is the first of its kind within a private higher education institution in Oman. Dr. Hamdan bin Sulaiman Al-Fazari, President of Sohar University, described the facility as a future beacon for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It will feature an integrated system that includes entrepreneurship education, specialized incubators, and industry partnerships, alongside hosting scientific and innovation events like hackathons and research forums. The project has also received OMR 300,000 in financial support from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, highlighting a collaborative national effort to bolster the sector.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
Spanning an area of 17,457 square meters, the Innovation Center is designed to be a comprehensive hub for turning ideas into economically valuable products and services. The building will house a wide range of facilities, including specialized laboratories, business incubators, an international business accelerator, and a dedicated patent office. The space will also feature meeting rooms, workshops, administrative offices, and commercial amenities to create a dynamic and supportive environment.
Strategic Partnerships and Research Initiatives
The foundation ceremony also served as a platform to forge key collaborations. The university signed several agreements, including a partnership with Omani Qatari Telecommunications Company “Ooredoo” and another with the UNESCO Regional Center for Quality and Excellence in Education. Additionally, a new research chair in Emerging Renewable and Sustainable Energy Technology was inaugurated, and a research grant was established in the name of the late Dr. Sulaiman bin Ahmed Al-Hoqani.
Aligning with Oman Vision 2040
Sohar University emphasized that the new Innovation Center is a strategic asset for achieving the goals of Oman Vision 2040. By developing national capabilities and skills, the center aims to contribute directly to building a prosperous knowledge-based economy and a vibrant, ambitious society, ensuring a sustainable future for the nation by facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technology from academia to industry.
