Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has officially launched a cloud service providing access to its own Quantum Processing Units (QPUs). This landmark initiative marks the region’s first quantum computing cloud service, enabling TII partners to run quantum workloads directly on TII’s physical quantum hardware.
Accelerating Quantum Research
The new cloud service addresses a significant bottleneck for researchers and developers in the region by offering a practical platform to experiment with quantum computing. By providing direct access to its in-house quantum hardware, TII is fostering a local ecosystem and reducing the reliance on international quantum computing providers. This service extends the cloud-based access previously used internally by TII’s Quantum Algorithms team, now allowing external partners to develop, validate, and benchmark their quantum workflows.
Homegrown Quantum Hardware
Developed by TII’s Quantum Computing Hardware Lab, the service operates on multiple QPU systems ranging from 5 to 25 qubits. A notable achievement is the use of in-house fabricated chips that demonstrate quantum coherence times up to ten times longer than TII’s first-generation prototypes. This significant improvement reflects the institute’s rapidly growing expertise in quantum design, fabrication, and system-level integration, positioning its locally developed hardware as a viable platform for applied research.
Integrated Software and Hardware
The launch represents a coordinated effort between TII’s Quantum Computing Hardware Lab and its Quantum Middleware team. The service is powered by Qibo, TII’s open-source quantum software framework, which serves as the software layer for job submission and execution. This unified interface allows users to seamlessly run workflows across both simulators and the physical QPU backends, streamlining the development process for hybrid quantum-classical applications.
About Technology Innovation Institute (TII)
The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is the dedicated applied research pillar of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). TII operates nine dedicated research centers in advanced materials, autonomous robotics, cryptography, AI and digital science, directed energy, quantum, secure systems, propulsion and space, and renewable and sustainable energy. The institute’s Quantum Research Centre, established four years ago, drives quantum technology development across the region and launched MENA’s first quantum computer in August 2021. It focuses on a full-stack approach to quantum computation based on superconducting circuits, as well as developing quantum sensors and cryptographic solutions.
