UAE Launches First Green Innovation District at Expo City Dubai to Spearhead Sustainable Growth

3 Min Read

In a significant move to bolster its position as a global leader in sustainability, the UAE’s Ministry of Economy and Tourism has partnered with Expo City Dubai to launch the nation’s first Green Innovation District. The landmark initiative is designed to create a unique ecosystem that merges sustainable industrial development with environmental stewardship and social impact, attracting a new generation of eco-conscious businesses to the region.

A Strategic Hub for Green Tech

Located within the sustainable urban landscape of Expo City Dubai, the district is strategically positioned to become a central hub for the green economy. Building on the legacy infrastructure of Expo 2020 and COP28, the free zone offers unparalleled connectivity between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as proximity to Jebel Ali Port and Al Maktoum International Airport. This prime location aims to attract and support businesses specializing in clean energy, the circular economy, and other green technologies, aligning with the UAE’s long-term goals, including the Net Zero 2050 Strategy and Centennial 2071 Plan.

Fostering Innovation with Green IP and Licensing

A core component of the initiative is a new supportive framework for innovators and businesses. The Ministry of Economy is introducing a new Green Intellectual Property (IP) roadmap designed to accelerate the development and localization of green technologies. To support this, an IP Office will be established on-site to promote R&D. Furthermore, Expo City will pioneer the UAE’s first “Green Licence,” an incentive program offering benefits to companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability standards.

Public-Private Collaboration at its Core

The Green Innovation District is powered by a collaboration between the public sector and key industry leaders. The project’s four strategic partners include Intesa Sanpaolo, a leading European bank that will provide circular economy financing expertise; Nestlé, which will contribute R&D and technical knowledge for sustainable manufacturing; Majra, the UAE’s National CSR Fund, set to channel environmental projects into the district; and Palmade, a local Dubai-based startup that transforms palm waste into biodegradable products. This partnership model is designed to create a dynamic and interconnected community operating on a circular economy model.
